CQ Roll Call is seeking a data reporter and analyst  to join our newsroom. The ideal candidate seeks the narrative in data, creatively visualizes data and inspires others to do the same. This role will manage CQ data, work with  reporters on data analysis and create simple, newsworthy graphics and tables for CQ subscribers.

About You
You work well with others and bring a diverse skill set that affords liaising with the whole newsroom and FiscalNote’s R&D group. You know how to leverage large datasets to find untold stories. You can also turn around and generate straightforward charts and tables to add value to stories and breaking congressional policy and political news. You bring a healthy blend of elevating the work of those around you and staying focused on your own unique contributions. You’re able to manage your time to do both effectively.
 
You’ve managed big, long projects in the past but understand the value of daily content too.

What To Expect In This Position:

    • Investigate, discover and map legacy CQ and FN data — including votes, vote studies, committee votes, etc. — and determine scope-of-work for cleaning, organizing and making it actionable for the newsroom
    • Creatively utilize tools such as Illustrator, JavaScript and Flourish to visualize data — for example, appropriations funding — in simple charts and tables
    • Mine proprietary and outside data for news and trends and collaborate to tell those stories through a variety of mediums (interactive, print, graphics, motion graphics)
    • Partner with relevant reporters throughout CQ Roll Call newsroom to investigate and hold the powerful accountable through data
    • Lead and execute proprietary data special projects such as Vote Studies, including the CQ Almanac; brainstorm and recommend additional projects highlighting our data in smart and unique ways

What Sets You Apart:

    • Experience running and supporting production of enterprise data platforms
    • Experience building infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data from various resources
    • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and other graphics creation tools
    • Knowledge of Excel, JavaScript, Python or R, and SQL
    • Worked with cloud-based data services such as AWS, DigitalOcean, Heroku
    • Understanding of newsroom workflow and a passion for journalism and public policy
    • Strong problem-solving and team-based collaboration skills 
    • 3-5 years of journalism and/or relevant data analysis experience
    • A keen interest in politics and policy in Washington
